Dehumidification for
Waterworks & power plants

Humidity levels in power stations and waterworks can be very extreme. Effective dehumidification is therefore essential to protect installations and the fabric of the building. A humid environment also promotes the growth of mold and other fungi. Vermin also thrive in excessively high humidity levels, which could make it much more difficult to comply with hygiene standards.

Waterworks dehumidifier

K.I.R.S.C.H. dehumidifiers with humidity control are a simple, reliable and efficient method of preventing corrosion caused by condensation water on pipes, fittings and containers.

When humidity condenses on cold surfaces, this is more than just an annoying side effect. The permanently damp surface causes paint to peel and rust to form. The development of bacteria and mold is just as problematic.

K.I.R.S.C.H. offers a simple solution: sorption dehumidifiers remove water vapor from the air before it condenses on cold surfaces. As a result, they ensure efficient air regulation in waterworks.

The dehumidifiers are specially designed for industrial use. They offer the reliability required in operation and have automatic control to minimize energy consumption.

Advantages of dehumidification in waterworks

Reduction in operating costs

The annual time required to remove corrosion and apply new protective coatings is reduced. The number of parts that need to be replaced due to corrosion is reduced. The greatest savings can be achieved by eliminating overtime to rectify faults - for example, valves blocked by corrosion or seized pumps. The life expectancy of the systems is improved and repair costs are reduced.

Improving the deployment of personnel

If corrosion on critical system parts is prevented, maintenance intervals can be planned in advance. Maintenance is carried out in the form of normal overhaul work during normal working hours and not as cost-intensive overtime troubleshooting.

Increased hygiene

Constantly wet parts of the system lead to the growth of mold, bacteria and fungi, especially in places where hygiene requirements are very high: in the waterworks that supply the population with clean drinking water. Clean drinking water is essential for the health of the population. In a certain sense, the waterworks provide essential food for everyone. Appropriate hygiene in the waterworks is an important prerequisite for bacteriologically clean drinking water.

The current situation in waterworks

When planning waterworks systems, great care is taken to ensure that no problems occur on the inside of the pipes and system components due to contamination or corrosion. The problem on the outside is often not taken into account in good time. Condensation always occurs when the temperature of a surface is lower than the dew point of the air. This effect can be seen in summer on glasses with cold drinks. In the waterworks, condensation also occurs in spring and fall. Although the outside air is cooler during this time, it is still humid and therefore condenses on the cold surface of pipes and fittings.

Waterworks systems are usually dehumidified in recirculation mode. Air is drawn in from the room to be dehumidified and blown back in as dry air. Outside air could now be used for the second air flow, which absorbs moisture from the desiccant in the dehumidifier and is then fed back outside as humid air. This may have disadvantages in elevated tanks, which are often built into a slope and filled: Longer pipes are required to supply and discharge the air; furthermore, openings to the outside must be avoided as far as possible in waterworks facilities to prevent sabotage.

K.I.R.S.C.H. offers a simple solution here: an air-cooled condenser in the appliance also enables recirculated air operation in the second air flow. The moisture removed from the air is discharged as condensate. An outside air connection is no longer necessary.

K.I.R.S.C.H. also has the optimum solution for controlling the dehumidifier. If the air temperature in the slide chamber or the water temperature changes during the course of the year, a sensor for the surface humidity is used for control. The sensor measures the humidity on the cold pipe surface and controls the dehumidification performance via a controller built into the dehumidifier in such a way that the formation of condensation water is prevented with the minimum possible energy requirement.

Strict purity and hygiene regulations apply to water as a foodstuff. These requirements can easily be met by dry slide chambers, pumping stations or treatment systems. At K.I.R.S.C.H., operators and planners can find dehumidification systems that meet today's high technical standards for other equipment in waterworks facilities.

Dehumidification in power plants

  • Avoid condensation
  • Dry preservation of boilers
  • Reduction of costly maintenance measures

Preservation:
If one or more boilers in a power plant are out of operation, the flue gas outlet of the boiler should be protected against corrosion. Dehumidification is simple and ensures that the boiler remains ready for use.

However, dehumidification can also be used to protect the pipe system from corrosion. Dry preservation makes maintenance work in the boiler easier and also results in a shorter start-up phase.

The solution is dehumidification!
A dehumidifier controls the relative humidity in a room or system. This prevents corrosion and electrical and electronic problems caused by moisture.

The maintenance costs for power stations, for example, are often unnecessarily high, and dry air reduces the need for rust protection coatings, for example, and there is no need to shut down the power station or parts of it for maintenance work.
